“Newspapers and the Austrian Post” – A Display and Presentation by Andy Taylor
26 March, 2026 Royal Philatelic Society London, 15 Abchurch Lane, London EC4N 7BW, UK (close to Cannon Street station)
54 Frame display available for viewing from 1PM, presentation at 4PM
The display covers the procedures used by the Austrian Post Office to handle newspapers, primarily inland and ex-Germany publications that residents subscribed for. Both the tax and the postal aspects are covered, in the period 1789 (first imposition of tax) to 1922 (withdrawal of special newspaper postage stamps). The area of concern is the Austrian Empire; Lombardy and Venetia are included but different arrangements in Hungary are not.
If you are a Fellow or Member of the Royal, you are of course entitled to be present with 1 or 2 guests in the normal way. Otherwise, email Andy Taylor (andy@kitzbuhel.co.uk) by 1 March and he’ll put you on his list. Admission is free. You don’t have to arrive at 1pm!
“The Austrian Empire from 1804 to 1918” – A Display in London by Keith Brandon
Keith has been invited to give a fifty-frame display of The Austrian Empire from 1804 to 1918 on 4 June 2026 at the Royal Philatelic Society of London, and he hopes that many of you will be able to attend. The display will include the Napoleonic period, Austria’s first postage stamps, the City Post, the Austrian Adriatic, mail between Austria and G.B., Bosnia & Herzegovina forwarded mail, Parliamentary post-offices, Lake Garda and many other topics.
The RPSL is located at 15 Abchurch Lane, London EC4N 7BW, and the display will be available to view from 1pm to 5pm. There is no parking, but Cannon Street underground station is very close. Members of the Royal and their guests can of course attend without any prior arrangement. If you are not a member of the Royal, you are equally welcome, but will need to pre-register. Please contact Keith at duntrading@aol.com and he will arrange this.
You are unlikely to see a more comprehensive and varied display of Austrian Empire material in the foreseeable future in the U.K., so please put the date in your diaries!
